Německý dlouhosrstý ohař je všestranně upotřebitelný lovecký pes. Má úžasně rozvinuté lovecké instinkty, velmi ochotně pracuje ve vodě i na suchu. Má výborný čich, vlohy pro aportování i vystavování, je ochotný ke stopování a dohledávce. Pro svou vrozenou ostrost se hodí spíše pro les.
